| The ENVIROPAK project
is aimed at improving southern Africa's export of fruits and peanuts through the
improvement of product quality and extension of shelf-life by
application of edible coatings with barrier properties. The edible coatings will be manufactured
from the waste products of sorghum processing.
In a joint effort of European scientists and research groups in
southern Africa, world-class expertise in the science and technology of
edible, biodegradable, plant-based protein coatings and films will be
developed. A multidisciplinary approach will be used, bringing together
expertise, particularly in polymer science and food science and
technology.
The project, which is a part of the European Commission programme
INCO, aims at enhancing sorghum utilisation in southern Africa, by value
addition to by-products of sorghum processing. It is also focused on
contributing to the movement towards sustainable, environment-friendly
packaging systems by replacing petroleum-based plastics with those from
renewable, cereal-based, resources.
